<p><span class="fontSize4"><strong><span class="fontSize3">What is a Buying Club?</span></strong></span></p>
<p><span class="fontSize3">A Buying Club is a group of neighbors (friends, family, co-workers) who collectively order a minimum of $500* worth of Pat's Pastured products&nbsp;on a monthly&nbsp;basis (May - November)&nbsp;that is&nbsp;delivered to a&nbsp;location convenient&nbsp;to the Buying Club members.</span></p>
<p><span class="fontSize3">* There is a $1,000 minimum for&nbsp;Buying Clubs&nbsp;outside of Rhode Island.</span></p>
<p><span class="fontSize4"><strong><span class="fontSize3">How does it work?</span></strong></span></p>
<p><span class="fontSize3">Each Buying Club has an organizer who serves as the contact person and site host. The organizer works with Sue Chien, our Buying Club Coordinator, to set up the delivery day and location. </span></p>
<ul>
<li><span class="fontSize3">Two weeks before the scheduled delivery Buying Club members log-in to our online store to place their order.</span></li>
<li><span class="fontSize3">Orders are filled on a&nbsp;first-come, first-served basis and a confirmation e-mail will be sent.</span></li>
<li><span class="fontSize3">On the delivery day the farm truck arrives at the delivery site. Buying Club members receive their products and make payment via cash or check.</span></li>
<li><span class="fontSize3">Buying Club members&nbsp;head home with&nbsp;their products, we continue on with our deliveries.</span></li>
<li><span class="fontSize3">We all meet back in the same spot the following month and do it again!</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span class="fontSize4"><strong><span class="fontSize3">Are there any fees to join?</span></strong></span></p>
<ul>
<li><span class="fontSize3">There&nbsp;are no fees to join a Buying Club and there is no minimum purchase for each individual Buying Club&nbsp;member. (The collective order total minimum is $500 in state and $1,000 out of RI.)</span></li>
<li><span class="fontSize3">There is only one mandatory fee associated with the Buying Clubs and that is a $.25 per pound delivery fee, which helps to defray our fuel costs. This works out to $5 per 20 pounds purchased. (This fee is waived for the Buying Club organizer.)</span></li>
<li><span class="fontSize3">Lastly, we charge a $20 restocking fee for orders that are not picked up. </span></li>

<p><br />There is so much going on at the farm that I don't know where to start. We have just finished lambing and what can I say they are sooo cute. Special shout out to all of our amazing ewes that did an fantastic job. More piglets set to born this week and the new laying hens have arrived and are enjoying their new egg-mobiles. We still have our Livestock Guardian Dog puppies for a few more weeks before they go to their new farm homes. Needless to say it is a fun time on the farm.</p>
<p>In other big, late breaking news we are opening up our on-farm store at Boesch Farm (830 South Rd. East Greenwich, RI) <strong>TOMORROW, Saturday April 27 from 9am-1pm</strong>. For all of you southern Rhode Islanders this is an opportunity to load up on all of our amazing products - grass-fed beef &amp; lamb, pastured pork, chicken, turkey and free range chicken and duck eggs!!! <strong>TOMORROW ONLY</strong> &nbsp;the first 10 customers to the store receive a free dozen eggs and all customers get a ticket for a chance to win a Pat's Pastured Gift Certificate for $30 (redeemable at the store or farmers' market). Visiting the store is also a great chance to visit with all of animals and see the new farm.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Finally, there are still a few Meat &amp; Poultry CSA shares available for the Spring/Summer 2012 season. You can find the sign up form at our website www.patspastured.com. Sign up soon because there is only a few weeks left before it starts.</p>
<p>We continue to be at the Hope Artiste Village Wintertime Farmers' Market every Saturday 10am-1pm, &nbsp;through May 12.</p>

<p><span class="fontSize3">There are 3 apprenticeship positions available for the 2011 season. Two positions are 9 months long running from mid-March through mid-November and 1 position is 6 months long running May through October. Apprentices receive housing,&nbsp;weekly living stipend and monthly educational opportunities at local farms, restaurant and with various food producers. Anyone interested must come to the farm for a one day checkout. </span><span class="fontSize3">Attitude is everything. No previous experience required.</span></p>
<p><strong><span class="fontSize3">Farm Description:</span></strong></p>
<p><span class="fontSize3">100 acres of pasture and woodlots spread over 5 farm sites in southern Rhode Island. All land is managed in an intensive rotational management system with multiple species of livestock. The main farm is located in Jamestown, Rhode Island. All meat and eggs are sold through farmers markets (3 summer, 2 winter in 2011), Meat/Poultry CSA, restaurant sales, buying clubs and on-farm sales.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs) have been bred for thousands of years to protect flocks of sheep, poultry and other livestock from predators. They are large enough to intimidate or kill predators, withstand extreme weather, and bond with the animals they are protecting.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong>About Pat&rsquo;s Pastured LGDs</strong></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">After having to travel as far as Maryland and Georgia to purchase working dogs for our farm, we decided to start breeding our own LGDs to offer as a resource for farmers in the Northeast.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Pat&rsquo;s Pastured LGDs are a cross between three common LGD breeds -- Anatolian Shepherd, Akbash and Great Pyrenees. We select our breeding dogs based on their performance in the pastures.&nbsp;All of our LGDs were bred and born on our farm, raised alongside the animals they are trained to protect, and trained by their parents and our other LGDs.&nbsp;</p>

The chickens are happy in their new hoophouse (which will hopefully mean and increase in egg production) and the sheep and dairy cows should be over in a week. <p style="text-align: left;"><span class="fontSize3">This year&nbsp;we are offering two types of&nbsp;turkeys -- Broad-Breasted Bronze and Standard White --&nbsp;</span><span class="fontSize3">both of which are raised on pasture. Turkeys are excellent foragers and therefore the pasture-based diet really influences the flavor and quality of the meat. </span><span class="fontSize3">Either&nbsp;breed will make an excellent centerpiece for your Thanksgiving meal.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span class="fontSize3"><strong>Standard White Turkeys </strong>are known for having a generous amount of white breast meat.<strong> </strong>They are generally larger (20+ pounds) and the cost is $5.50 per pound.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span class="fontSize3"><strong>Broad-Breasted Bronze</strong> <strong>Turkeys</strong> are a slower-growing, older-style breed. They are regarded for having a complex flavor, with slightly more dark meat than the Standard White. They are generally smaller in size (18-20 pounds) and cost $6.50 per pound.</span></p>
