We are back from our newsletter hiatus to bring you the latest news at Pat's Pastured!  This issue includes registration information about our Summer Meat and Poultry CSA's, our Meat Money Program, Winter Farmers' Markets, Winter Store Hours, and Work-Share Opportunities for the upcoming season!

Our Buying Clubs bring the market to YOU!

 

What is a Buying Club?

A Buying Club is a group of neighbors (friends, family, co-workers) who collectively order a minimum of $500* worth of Pat's Pastured products on a monthly basis that is delivered to a location convenient to the Buying Club members.

* There is a $1,000 minimum for Buying Clubs outside of Rhode Island within 75 miles of the farm.

How does it work?

Each Buying Club has an organizer who serves as the contact person and site host. The organizer works with Sue Chien, our Buying Club Coordinator, to set up the delivery day and location.

  • Two weeks before the scheduled delivery Buying Club members log-in to our online store to place their order.
  • Orders are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and a confirmation e-mail will be sent.
  • On the delivery day the farm truck arrives at the delivery site. Buying Club members receive their products and make payment via cash or check.
  • Buying Club members head home with their products, we continue on with our deliveries.
  • We all meet back in the same spot the following month and do it again!

Are there any fees to join?

  • There are no fees to join a Buying Club and there is no minimum purchase for each individual Buying Club member. (The collective order total minimum is $500 in state and $1,000 out of RI.)
  • There is only one mandatory fee associated with the Buying Clubs and that is a $.25 per pound delivery fee, which helps to defray our fuel costs. This works out to $5 per 20 pounds purchased. (This fee is waived for the Buying Club organizer.)
  • Lastly, we charge a $20 restocking fee for orders that are not picked up.

Tuesday, November 20th

Pick-up your Thanksgiving Turkeys, Cider, Veggies, Holiday Pies, and Floral Centerpieces.

 

The following friends will be at our Thankgiving Market to help you prepare for the big feast!

When you pre-order, be sure to mention that you are picking up your order at Pat's Pastured on the 20th.

 

Also, turkeys are by reservations only.  Please order your free-range turkey by downloading our Turkey Form and sending it in with your deposit.

 

And lastly, we will also have our other Pat's Pastured meat and egg products available for purchase at our Thanksgiving Market.

Livestock Guardian Dogs (LGDs) have been bred for thousands of years to protect flocks of sheep, poultry and other livestock from predators. They are large enough to intimidate or kill predators, withstand extreme weather, and bond with the animals they are protecting.

 

About Pat’s Pastured LGDs

After having to travel as far as Maryland and Georgia to purchase working dogs for our farm, we decided to start breeding our own LGDs to offer as a resource for farmers in the Northeast.

Pat’s Pastured LGDs are a cross between three common LGD breeds -- Anatolian Shepherd, Akbash and Great Pyrenees. We select our breeding dogs based on their performance in the pastures. All of our LGDs were bred and born on our farm, raised alongside the animals they are trained to protect, and trained by their parents and our other LGDs. 

 

We currently have livestock guardian dogs available for sale.  These pups were born in February 2012 and have been trained and raised with our livestock for their entire lives. 

Our LGDs are available for $1500 per dog.  Please contact Pat for further inquiry.

PAT’S PASTURED 2013 APPRENTICES

2 Positions Open

 
Farm Description
100 acres of pasture and woodlots spread over 4 farm sites in southern Rhode Island. All land is managed in an intensive rotational management system with multiple species of livestock. The main farm is located in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. All meat and eggs are sold through farmers markets (5 summer, 3 winter in 2013), Meat/Poultry CSA, restaurant sales, buying clubs and on-farm sales.
 
Livestock Details:
• Pasture-raised heritage breed pigs– Berkshire, Tamworth & Large Black pigs
• Broilers raised on pasture and processed on-farm in a RI Health Department processing unit
• Pasture-raised turkeys
• Grass-fed beef steers
• Grass-fed Jersey dairy cows
• Grass-fed Katahdin hair sheep
• Free-range laying hens
• Free-Range ducks
 
Responsibilities:
• Daily watering, feeding and pasture rotation of broiler chickens, laying hens, ducks, turkeys, pigs, cattle and sheep
• Management of chick brooder
• Equipment maintenance
• Product delivery
• Poultry processing
• Assist with sales of products
• Assisting with products processing & packaging
• Assist with maintenance of on farm vegetable garden
 
Qualifications:
• Enjoys working with animals
• Willingness to work long hours in all weather conditions
• Willingness to learn
• Valid drivers license
• Ability to lift 50lbs on regular basis required
 
There are 2 apprenticeship positions available for the 2013 season. The 2 positions are 9 months long running from March through November. Apprentices receive housing on-farm, $150 a week living stipend, access to vegetable and monthly educational opportunities at local farms, restaurant and with various food producers.
 
Anyone interested must come to the farm for a one day checkout.  Attitude is everything.  No previous experience required
